Grand Rapids Whitewater -  Restore the Rapids update

Grand Rapids Whitewater will be joining us to discuss the massive community project to restore the namesake rapids to the Grand River.  

This project will: 

  • Bring rapids back to the Grand River
  • Improve fish and mussel habitat
  • Improve water quality and river functions,
  • Provide safe recreational access to the Grand River,
  • Build a viable sea lamprey barrier
  • Be a catalyst for the improvement of trails, parks and green spaces along both banks of the Grand River.

The project has and will continue to inspire significant public and private investment in the Grand River Corridor.

Discuss the potential impact of the Grand Rapids Whitewater restoration project.

Featured Speakers

Matt Chapman serves as the Chief Program Officer for Grand Rapids Whitewater. Matt has been with Grand Rapids Whitewater for six years and has over 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Matt is experienced in marketing, special events management, grant writing & management, the donor development process, and organizational development. Matt holds a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Public Relations and a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Administration from Grand Valley State University.

 

Steve Heacock is the President/CEO for Grand Rapids Whitewater.  Steve is a business and community leader whose career has included executive management in health care and scientific research, legal and accounting practice, community building, civic engagement, and public service.  Through the years, Steve has played a key role in many of the developments that have led to the economic revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids, including the Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, Millennium Park, Phase II of the Van Andel Institute, and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in downtown Grand Rapids.  Steve currently serves on the boards of directors for Legacy Trust and United Bank of Michigan.
